I just returned from the COSPAR 2008 meeting in Montreal, Canada to receive my Outstanding Paper for Young Scientist Award. First, I have to say that Montreal is a great city with a lot of European flair and culture. Second, although I only spent one day at the meeting I had the chance to meet friends I haven't seen in years, for instance from the German Aerospace Center and the European Space Agency. To the right I have included one picture with me receiving the award as part of a small ceremony.

Hi there,
This weekend I have finished my Basic Coastal Cruising course at the Spinnaker Sailing School in Redwood City, which certifies me as a skipper. On the last day of the course another student and me went on our first solo-sail without an instructor... and of course at that point the engine broke on the way home. But we managed to dock only using our sails and it worked. Another great adventure and I am looking forward to more similar ones.

I just found this picture of me running at the Presidio 10 run in April this year. This is a 10K run starting at Crissy Fields, leading over the Golden Gate Bridge, and back. The scenery on the way back was especially nice on this Sunday morning - the skyline of San Francisco.
